Mindfulness and the Moving Image

In today’s attention economy and image-saturated environment, many students struggle with digital fatigue. Mindfulness and the Moving Image is a specially designed Creative Wellness program for secondary school students that uses film something they are already familiar with—as an engaging entry point into mindfulness and emotional awareness.

Across three structured sessions, students are guided to move from passive viewing to active, mindful participation. Through simple practices such as centering, awareness of breath, and structured reflection, they learn to watch movies with more intention. The moving image serves as a stimulus, bringing thoughts, emotions, and reactions into awareness. Students explore how what they see, feel, and think are interconnected—helping them better understand their internal experiences.

The program introduces accessible frameworks such as “the See, Feel, Think method” to organise perception and response, building attentional control, emotional literacy, and perspective-taking. Cinema, as a language unfolding in time, allows students to see how meaning and emotion change moment by moment. Through this awareness, students develop greater agency in how they respond to challenges like stress, conflict, and academic pressure.

This approach supports key mental health outcomes by helping students:

•    Better understand and regulate emotions

•    Develop empathy and awareness of others

•    Build resilience in the face of stress and setbacks

Designed to be highly interactive and age-appropriate, the program meets students where they are—using familiar media to create meaningful conversations about wellbeing.

By the end of the course, students will not only watch films differently, but also gain practical tools to navigate their inner world with greater clarity, calm, and confidence—supporting both their mental health and overall development.

Mindfulness and the Moving Image was developed by critically acclaimed filmmaker Tzang Merwyn Tong and Dr. Kathirasan K., a thought leader in the secular mindfulness field.
